The Castle of Milazzo has a very ancient history, dating back to the 9th century when it was built as a defensive outpost for the protection of the coast and the port.
Over the centuries, the castle has been expanded and modified several times, taking on its current appearance under Norman rule in the 12th century.
During Spanish domination, the castle was used as a prison for rebels and political dissidents, and underwent significant restoration work in the late 16th century.
In the 19th century, the castle became the private property of an aristocratic family, the Bonaventuras, who transformed it into a noble residence and added decorative elements in neogothic and neoclassical styles.
In the 20th century, the Castle of Milazzo was used as a military base, hosting troops and anti-aircraft cannons during World War II, and as the headquarters of some public offices.
It was only in the 1980s that the castle was returned to the city and opened to the public as a museum and tourist attraction.
Today, the Castle of Milazzo is located on the tip of the Milazzo peninsula and is an imposing fortress that overlooks the harbor and the historic center of the city.
